I did that at first but after a while I started to hate sugar. I took less and less sugar every time. Black coffee is not bad at all, you get used to it way earlier than beer. Why you go around s***ting on parades bro? Just because you can't see why kids love the taste of cinnamon toast crunch, doesn't mean others can't. I drink coffee black, usually a dark french roast. I drink beer as IPA, the higher the IBU the better. I don't smoke, but i'm not going to sit here and tell people it tastes like paper and I can't understand why they do it.. Spoiler: click to toggle

I'm kind of with Steve on this one, because whenever I tell someone that I don't really like beer, I nearly always get "Well, it's an acquired taste" as a response. I guess that's fine and all, but why would you want to acquire a taste that you didn't like the first time? Food shouldn't have a "probation period" after which it's tolerable. Unless there's some other benefit to eating/drinking something, I'm going to stick to things that taste good to me. As for the topic, I'm pro-caffeine. I was addicted for a while, I'd have a Monster (or maybe two) just about every day for several years. I've managed to cut that out and stick to a cup of coffee in the mornings at work, but I don't depend on it so much as it's simply become a habit. I'm not even sure if it helps me anymore, I just happen to like it (with a generous amount of creamer). Edited by Zeddicus, Sep 14 2015, 01:33 PM.

because there's a physiological basis to it: how things tastes changes over time. for many people, food that tasted absolutely horrible to them when they're kids end up becoming more tolerable when they're in their 20s. i hated the taste of beer when I was 15 -- i think that was the first time I tried it -- but now in my mid 20s I can chug a few pints or like it's water. in regards to caffeine: it's helpful. i very rarely consume it so I've not developed a tolerance -- half a cup of coffee can keep me up all night. during my university days, my friends would go through many cups/cans of coffee/monster when we had longass essays due, and i'd be there buzzed from half a cup of coffee. I used to hate beer when I first drank it. I think when I really started to have fun getting faded, that's when I opened up to drinking beer. Like I associated beer with having fun, so I can just chug it down now. Can't say the same for hard liquor, most of it is still gross. |

See, I can understand this because I've had a few foods like that as well. I should've been clearer, but I was referring to things you don't like and continue consuming while -still- not liking it until you simply get used to the taste as opposed to actually enjoying it. Perhaps the fault lies with me and my personal definition of "acquired taste". To me, it sounds like "We just kept eating/drinking it until it didn't suck." |

I agree, to an extent. I can see why people would try to 'get used' to the taste of healthy foods they don't like. I, for example, don't really enjoy the taste of many vegetables. I could see the benefit of forcing myself to eat them until I'm fine with the taste. Although I don't have the willpower, or care enough, to do that, it would certainly allow me to live a healthier lifestyle. However, in the case of alcohol, I don't see the point. |
